Dual bounds for the positive definite functions approach to mutually unbiased bases

چکیده

A long-standing open problem asks if there can exist 7 mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in $$\mathbb {C}^6$$ , or, more generally, $$d + 1$$ MUBs {C}^d$$ for any d that is not a prime power. Recent work of Proc Am Math Soc 146(3), 1143–1150 (2018) proposed an application the method positive definite functions (a relative Delsarte’s coding theory and Lovász’s semidefinite programming relaxation independent set problem) as means answering this question negative. Namely, they ask whether exists polynomial unitary matrix input satisfying various properties which, through functions, would show cannot . Using convex duality argument, we prove no such degree at most 6. We also propose general dual certificate which conjecture to certify never strictly fewer than

Equiangular Vectors Approach to Mutually Unbiased Bases

Two orthonormal bases in the d-dimensional Hilbert space are said to be unbiased if the square modulus of the inner product of any vector of one basis with any vector of the other equals 1 d . The presence of a modulus in the problem of finding a set of mutually unbiased bases constitutes a source of complications from the numerical point of view. Therefore, we may ask the question: Is it possi...

Mutually unbiased bases and discrete Wigner functions

Mutually unbiased bases and discrete Wigner functions are closely, but not uniquely related. Such a connection becomes more interesting when the Hilbert space has a dimension that is a power of a primeN = d, which describes a composite system of n qudits. Hence, entanglement naturally enters the picture. Although our results are general, we concentrate on the simplest nontrivial example of dime...

Real Mutually Unbiased Bases

We tabulate bounds on the optimal number of mutually unbiased bases in R. For most dimensions d, it can be shown with relatively simple methods that either there are no real orthonormal bases that are mutually unbiased or the optimal number is at most either 2 or 3. We discuss the limitations of these methods when applied to all dimensions, shedding some light on the difficulty of obtaining tig...

Constructions of Mutually Unbiased Bases

Two orthonormal bases B andB′ of a d-dimensional complex inner-product space are called mutually unbiased if and only if |〈b|b〉| = 1/d holds for all b ∈ B and b′ ∈ B′. The size of any set containing pairwise mutually unbiased bases of C cannot exceed d + 1. If d is a power of a prime, then extremal sets containing d+1 mutually unbiased bases are known to exist. We give a simplified proof of thi...

Unextendibility of Mutually Unbiased Bases

Besides being of independent interest in understanding the structure of (partial) MUB collections and their conjugacy classes, satisfactory answers to these questions will help the following investigations: – the search for lower bounds on the number of MUBs and specifically for efficient constructions; – the search for upper bounds on the number of MUBs even for small non-prime-power dimension...
